Back from the Big Apple

the girls in Times Square--minus Lois Jean (she's taking the picture) and Stephanie (she was at work)

This past weekend some of the Spencer girls had a girls weekend in NYC. My sister and Luke's sister both moved to Manhattan this past year and so a trip to visit was a must. Talk about a small world--they only live a few blocks from each other. We all flew in on Thursday and then spent three really fun days exploring NYC. For my memory's sake (or if your planning a trip to NYC and want to know some good places to go) this is what we did...

Thursday

- arrived at LGA and took a cab to my sisters office (also learned that cabs make me SUPER car sick!)

- went to Rockefeller and saw the Christmas tree and the skating rink (the Today Show makes it look A LOT bigger than it really is!)
- ate Two Boots pizza in Grand Central Station (highly recommend their food court over Rockefellers)

- went and saw St. Patricks Cathedral
- walked through Saks Fifth Avenue and ooed and awed at all the Christmas decorations (did you know their 8th floor is all shoes? it even has it's own zipcode 10022!)

- shopped 5th avenue

- took the subway (all by myself!) up to see the charter school that Kari works at and met up with Lucy and Lisa

- stopped for a snack at Europan

- went to dinner at Penang's with my sister and her boyfriend (really good Malaysian food)

Friday

- we took the subway down to Times Square - shopped the holiday shops in Bryant Park

- ate more Two Boots pizza at Rockefeller

- taste tested the first contender in our search for the best NYC cupcake-- Crumbs (yum!)

- shopped 5th avenue

- rode the subway down to Bleecker St and shopped the boutiques

- went to Amy's Bread and tested their cupcakes (the red velvet was DELICIOUS!)

- stopped at the famous Magnolia Bakery (their spice cupcake with cream cheese frosting was amazing--the rest were kind of disappointing, their cheesecake was really good)
- went to Mama Mexico for dinner (very good mexican food, VERY loud restaurant, must get the guacamole appetizer--mmmm)
- on our way to get dessert we walked past the Seinfeld Restaurant

- as if we hadn't eaten enough, we went to Pinkberry for their unique frozen yogurt and fresh fruit (if you are going to NYC this place is a must visit! it is very unique and soooo good!)
Saturday
- we took the subway down to the garment district (disappointed, couldn't find very many places and of the ones we did find, they weren't even open yet)

- went down to Soho and walked around (learned that a lot of places don't open til noon on Saturdays)

- took the subway over to Ground Zero

- shopped at Century 21 across the street (my sister calls it Nordstrom Rack on steroids--and it is!)

- went back up to Soho for lunch. had to try the Peanut Butter & Co. for lunch--all their sandwiches have pb on them (even ones like BLT and the Pregnant Lady--pb and bread and butter pickles) very unique! also ate some typical NY style pizza at a little pizza joint on the corner
- stopped at Tonnie's Minis for more cupcake testing (another great contender!)

- Kari, Isaac, Lisa and Mandy went up to Broadway to see A Chorus Line while Lois Jean and Lucy saw A Drowsy Chaperone

- Steph and I stayed down in Soho and did a little shopping at Purl Soho

- then went and got mani/pedi's--heaven!

- met up with everybody after the shows and went to dinner at an Italian Cucina (can't remember where or the name of it)

- set out, on what turned into quite an adventure (think HUNDREDS of drunk santas EVERYWHERE!), to find Sugar Sweet Sunshine (luckily they turned out to be THE BEST CUPCAKES!!!--must visit!!!) - went back up to the west side to try our last contender, Buttercup Bake Shop (a good cupcake, but nothing like Sugar Sweet Sunshines)

- headed back to Steph's apartment just in time to greet our cousin Kim as she got off the shuttle

Sunday

- went to church with Stephanie

- flew home to the sweetest husband ever who watched our cute kid all weekend so I could have a get away with the girls

NYC is amazing and we had a great time! It was so fun to have a weekend of no kids--just shopping, eating good food, and talking. Where we going next Spencer girls? :)

Alicia-- what a fun weekend! The food there is so amazing. I love Penang! Sorry we didn't make it into the city. Let's get together in California. We'll be there the Dec 21-30 and back again Jan 2-15. (we are going to Seattle for New Year's). When will you be there?

Holy COW, sounds like you had a blast, and I'm totally craving a cup cake right now! I can't believe all you did in such a short amount of time. I talked to Kimmy today and she said that she's having SO much fun too. She even got front row seats to Wicked tonight with a friend. Sounds like I need to come to NYC somtime, I'm missing out. haha
I'm glad you had a good time Alicia, there is nothing better then going out with the girls and then coming home to your cute family. Didn't you miss them so much? I always do!
